A group of students from Southlands Special School took part in a North Tyneside Children's University Summer School ecology project based along a section of the Avenue Branch Line waggonway leading to Holywell Dene.
Working with a team of Waggonways Wardens, the young people helped to assemble and install bird-nesting boxes along their 'adopted' section of the Avenue Branch Line.

The students also helped Waggonways Wardens complete a general tidy-up of the waggonway, litter picking and removing overgrown weeds. Now the new bird-nesting boxes are installed, the students will monitor their use, recording what types of birds are nesting.
