Art School

Children from schools across North Tyneside took part in a Waggonways Art Summer School, August 2007, to produce designs for a range of waggonways publicity and exhibition materials.

Drawing inspiration from archive resources and natural materials found along the waggonways, children aged 4 to 11 worked with an artist to produce line drawings and paintings based around 4 central themes relating to waggonways heritage:

  • history of the waggonways
  • transport and engineering along the waggonways
  • wildlife and biodiversity along the waggonways
  • the waggonways as a leisure resource

The children produced a stunning collection of work, the best of which selected as art work for waggonways publicity leaflets to be distributed to all schoolchildren in North Tyneside. In addition, the children's art work went forward to produce 4 waggonways exhibition banners, to promote the waggonways of North Tyneside as an exciting leisure and learning resource at venues and events across the borough.
