North Tyneside Council received funding from the Government (ODPM) and the Heritage Lottery Fund to help regenerate the network of waggonways across North Tyneside.

As part of this programme, North Tyneside Children’s University was commissioned to work out-of-school-hours with children across the borough, to develop new resources interpreting the natural, social and industrial history and heritage of the waggonways.

Working with a range of professionals and using a variety of media, such as music, film, art, IT, writing and oral recording, children have enjoyed many opportunities to develop new skills and to contribute to their local community as young citizens.

The North Tyneside Children’s University Waggonways Project has encompassed a wide range of children’s projects taking place across the borough over the past 3 years.
